“Just Like Mommy” Accessories

Hello everyone! I hope your week is going great so far. My husband is out of town for a few days so I’ve been crafting like crazy. When the cat is away, the mice will play… or craft. I can’t wait to show you a few things I’ve been working on for next week.

Did you have a chance to see the “Just Like Mommy” Purse from yesterday?

The title is a little deceiving, because this purse could work for anyone of any age with the right fabric choice. I think I might make one for myself, just a little bigger. Then The Little Lady and I will match- now wouldn’t that be cute.

Okay, like I promised here is a tutorial for how to make the accessories for the purse.

The Little Lady’s favorite “non toy” toy is bottles so this was first on my list when I was thinking of accessories to put in her purse. All you do is clean out the containers and glue the tops on. That’s it. Done.

Next up, the play make-up. I used decoupage to place fabric circles on the compact powder case, because I wanted it to match the purse (solely for cuteness factor.)

Pop out the eye shadow and powder and pour a little nail polish into the empty compartments. Easy, right? I found this idea at Mommy by Day…Crafter By Night.

I wanted to make the dollar bill crinkle. Have you ever wondered what makes that crinkle noise in baby toys? Wonder no more! It’s plain ole’ cellophane.

Cut out 2 rectangles at 4” x 7” and cut the #1 out of green felt and embroidered it by hand. Then place the fabric right sides together and lay the cellaphane on top. Sew around edges leaving a couple inch gap on one end (1/2” seam allowance). Then turn it inside out and then stitch over the edges and close the gap. Sew the cellaphane just as you would vinyl. I used all the fabrics from the purse to make the wallet. It’s kind of funky.

I cut out the fabric as follows:

This will become the outside of the wallet. First, gather the long strip.

Then piece the 3 fabrics together just like you did with the purse. I used 1/4” seam allowance here.

Take the 8” x 7” piece of fabric and fold it along the shorter side right sides together. Then sew the open sides together. From here on out, the seam allowance will be 1/2”. Turn it inside out. This will become the larger pocket.

Next, take the 8” x 3” piece and fold it in half hamburger style (right sides together). Sew one of the wide open sides closed. Turn it inside out. This will become the smaller pocket.

Then sew the 8” x 4.5” piece the outside of the wallet (right sides together). Iron seams open for each piece. Also, top stitch where you sewed the soon-to-be-pockets closed.

This is what there should be so far:

Sew the right folded edge of the smaller pocket to the center of the larger pocket.
Okay, now layer the pockets onto the non-ruffled/non-pieced side of the outer shell like so:

Then fold it together so the pockets are sandwiched in the middle. Make sure they are aligned correctly (that’s a reminder for me- I had to use the seam ripper a couple times for this one.)
