Creating Christmas Favorites

The Creating Christmas Event whipped me into Christmas crafting shape. My home is officially ready for Christmas now. I really enjoyed getting to share last week with some great fellow bloggers too. I thought I’d show you a few of the creative things some of the other bloggers came up with last week. I’ll have to remember these for next year since I’ve left my Christmas crafting behind to focus on gift giving. Here it goes~

This mantle from Life on Walnut Street is warm and sweet. Sarah made the birch wood candles in front and she tells you how to make them here.

Then there’s this colorful mantle from Domestic Deadline. Isn’t it beautiful! And yes, Emily made all those trees!

A great project is easy and comes out looking amazing. This sock wreath from 52 Mantles fits that criteria to the T. I still can’t believe that is just a sock.

These crayon trees from Modern Yet Old-Fashioned would be so fun to make when The Little Lady is a little older.

Musings of a Glamourpuss made this cute tree embellishment out of scrap lace. This is so cute and would look great on the Little Lady.

Christmas Cookies & Free Printable Gift Tag

This is the second year I’ve made sugar cookies and since that’s half the time I’ve been married, it counts as a tradition in our house. I can’t wait for next year when The Little Lady can help me frost. Last year, I combined two recipes, and they turned out absolutely delicious and very few broke, which is a winning recipe in my book. BUT then I saw this recipe from Peppermint Plum and subsequently pinned it and committed to trying it out. I think this one beat out last year’s recipe by far. The secret ingredient that makes it fluffy, unbreakable, thick, and moist is sour cream (I went all out and used the whole milk stuff… shhhh)

My sister-in-law and I decorated these fluffy cookies, because my husband isn’t the “cookie decorating” kind of a guy. We got really creative, but I still think we have a ways to go until we reach Martha Stewart caliber.

These are going to make perfect treat for neighbors and friends. I made these gift tags for the plate of goodies. You can print them out too for free. Right click on the image below and save it to your computer and then you can print.

I had to laugh out loud when I saw her silverware turkey display for Thanksgiving and her Perfectly Puzzled post would be a great idea for a holiday ornament. You’ll love what she has to share with you today…

Hi everyone, I’m Christina from I Gotta Create! I’m so happy to meet you over here at Janny’s beautiful blog. Today I’m sharing a handmade holiday card. These can feel like a real luxury in this electronic age!

This card in tones of blue, lavender and silver makes you almost feel the frosty nip in the air! Grab some hot chocolate and let’s see how it’s done:

That silver snowflake at the top is something special we’ll talk about in a minute. The main image is stamped in a lavender chalk ink on white cardstock. On top of that I stamped circles in light blue {see closeup}. Gold pigment ink-stamped snowflakes are the final layer falling on Santa and child. This is so quick and yet creates a very rich effect.

The stamped cardstock is then layered on light blue and darker blue cardstock for dimension.

Two coordinating background papers are joined by a lavender ribbon to host this little framed ensemble.

The final touch is the little silver snowflake up in the right corner. Can you guess what it’s made of?I also used it in these projects:

Everything here is much simpler to make than it looks, and all are a joy to give!

Lacy Ornament {Day 4}

Lacy Ornament

Co-hosting Creating Christmas has really helped me get into the Christmas spirit this year. I feel like I’ve been in a crafting marathon all week, but I’ve gotta tell ya that my house is beginning to look a lot like Christmas. I’ve been wanting to use lace in some of my decorations, and I have finally found the perfect place to use it- an ornament.

It’s simple and elegant.

I used clear plastic ornaments, a small scrap of lace and lace trimming. Then I used spray adhesive and hot glue to attach the lace.

I removed the ornament top first. Then I sprayed the ornament with spray adhesive and wrapped the lace over the top.

I tucked the lace ends inside the ornament and replaced the top.

It actually looks just fine like this, but I didn’t stop there…

I glued a trimming of lace around the middle and then hung it on the tree.

Simple and sweet.

You could make a dozen variations of this using different kinds of lace, leaving out the trim, putting the lace inside, etc…

Hello, Bloggy Friends. My name is Vanessa, from Home Sweet Butterfly. I am so excited to be here today with Janny and all her friends from Que Linda! I alway love stopping by Que Linda and seeing all the creative projects Janny comes up with. She is crafty! Thank you Janny for asking me to guest host today!

It seems every year Christmas is becoming more expensive. Let’s face it, we need to be more creative when it comes to decorating for any occasion. I know most of us have a lot of ribbons, floral wire, paints on hand, so use what you have to keep your cost down. Today, I will be showing you how to make a pine cone swag for your door. Here are the supplies you will need -About 10 medium sizes pine cones (go around parks, wooded areas, friends/family) Spray paint Floral wire wire cutter ribbon I took my pine cones and spray painted them gold, carmel latte and red banner by Krylon. I gave them two coats.

After the pine cones are dry, take the floral wire and wrap around the end of the pine cone, then twist.

Make sure to cut each floral wire different length when wrapping to the pine cones. The pine cones will lay better.

You can see the wires are all different lengths and I gathered at the top and twisted. I clipped off any long wires and made a loop on top to hang over my hook.

Once I arranged my pine cones, I added the bow.

I added floral wire to the back of the bow and tied it to the hook. I am not a bow maker, so I googled how to make a bow. Here is the site I used to make this easy bow.

Love the different colors.

I really love how this Christmas swag turned out and I will store it carefully in my wreath box once Christmas is over. The nice part is this can be reused over and over. Once there was a Snowman, Snowman, Snowman...{Day 2}

Wooden Snowman

My friend, Jacquelyn, recently pinned this snowman from Etsy and then we got together to make one for ourselves. Don’t you love when a pin comes to fruition? I’ve gotta tell you that it’s way more fun making something with someone else.

This is the inspiration (from Jodyaleavitt Etsy Shop):

This is how mine turned out~

And it is as easy as it looks. You might have to make friends with someone with a saw, but it’s beyond easy once it’s cut.

1.) Sand down rough parts

2.) Paint

3.) Use sandpaper to rub off the paint on the edges.

4.) Glue on buttons, nose, and paint on eyes (I used a sharpie for the eyes)

5.) Find a piece of Christmas-esque scrap fabric and wrap it around the neck. You can pin it down or glue it or let static friction do it’s thing.

DAY 1

Rosette Ornament

I’m co-hosting Creating Christmas along with 14 other bloggers all week long. I will be posting Christmas projects every day this week and we’ll have a couple guests show us a few things they’ve been creating too. I can’t wait to show you what I’ve been working on! Before this year, a Christmas storage box didn’t even exist in our house. I’m pretty much starting our Christmas decoration collection from scratch and this is going to be just the jump start I need.

The best part of Creating Christmas is that I will also be co-hosting a link party this Saturday. You too can share some of your holiday creations.

Today, I’m going to show you this rosette ornament I made. I originally saw it at Target and of course now I can’t find the image online. It’s darling and although I knew it would take more time than the average ornament, I thought it would be worthwhile.

The materials were really cheap:

* 3 sheets of red felt

* needle and red thread

* hot glue gun

* scrap piece of ric-rac or ribbon

* styrofoam ball (I used one that came in a pckg. from the dollar store- way cheap!)

I made each rosette by cutting a swirl into a small circle of felt fabric and then sewing it by hand as I twisted it back together.

Then I glued the ric-rac and each rosette to the ball.

I love that I barely spent $1 on this and it was $15 at Target. That’s always a good feeling.

It looks so good on my Christmas tree too!

DIY Toddler Chairs {Made out of PVC Pipe}

My mom made a chair out of PVC pipe for me when I was about one year old and I actually still have it (the fabric is worn and it’s in pieces right now.) The Little Lady played with it until I decided to do an update. Plus, I wanted to make one for her cousin for his first birthday.

These would make great beach chairs. They’d be great for camping too. Don’t you remember being a kid and loving things made just your size?

The Little Lady had to sneak into almost every shot. I think she’s going to miss having two chairs to drag around the house.

I was bummed to only find PVC with printing along the sides, but that didn’t bother me too much, because I knew spray paint would solve all my problems. It always does.

Update: 100% Acetone Nail Polish Remover will take off the marks on the PVC.

These chairs are pretty easy and require very basic sewing skills.

You will need one piece of sturdy fabric such as corduray, denim, or upholstery. I cut the fabric at 29.5” X 17.5”. I used 1/2” seam allowance. You can adjust the size of the chair and the fabric just as long as the fabric has enough slack when it’s put on the chair.

Once the fabric is cut, fold right sides together hot dog style and sew the long sides together.

Then, move the seam so it is in the center and iron seams open.

Sew shorter sides together. Leave a few inches on one side.

Turn it inside out through that opening….

Then lie it flat and fold the short sides towards the middle on the side of the fabric with the seam. I folded 3” on each side. Then sew it down. I ended up sewing two lines so it would take some wear and tear, but that’s not in the picture.

After you’ve made two loops on the short ends of the fabric, you’re done, and now it’s time to work with the PVC pipe.

I used 3/4” PVC Pipe

You will need:

8 elbow pieces

6 T-shaped pieces

1 length of 3/4” PVC Pipe

I cut the pipe into 16 pieces with the following lengths:

7 pieces at 10 inches

2 pieces at 6 inches

4 pieces at 4 inches

4 pieces at 5 inches.

I used a PVC Pipe Cutter (actually I enlisted my husband to do this part). This takes quite a bit of elbow grease. You can use a saw if you don’t have a cutter.

I used Krylon Fusion Plastic Spray Paint to paint the pieces. They were really hard to put together since the paint made them thicker. Next time, I’m painting the whole chair.

Put it all together using the pictures below as a guide.

Now all they need is a little one to sit in them!

Christmas Advent Calendar

Ready or not, Christmas is around the corner and as of today, we’re counting down the days. I’ve been working on this advent calendar for what seems like forever. It started out as a simple idea, but I kept adding more and more to it until it became really time consuming. (I’m sure some of you know what it’s like to have a project explode from simple to crazy.) As I was putting together this calendar, I started to see tons of adorable and, more importantly, easy advent calendar ideas out there, but I had already invested too much time that there was no turning back. But at last, it’s finished! And not a day too soon.

Despite all the work, I love how it turned out.

I folded the sides to look like a present. Now I just need to put a bow on top.

Do you want to know what the secret ingredient was?

Toilet paper rolls. Ha! We’ve been saving these things since September.

I cut the TP rolls in half and I made 25 of them. (I know Advent Calendars only go to 24 days, but I really wanted to add the 25th.) I cut holes into a piece of cardboard to correspond with each tube. Then I hot glued the tubes into each hole. I added 4 walls and a back to make a box.

Then I decoupaged some Christmas fabric onto the box.

Then I made the little drawers using scrapbook paper. I folded fancy gold paper into fourths and glued them in a pinwheel design onto the top. Later I added a number in the center. (I really wish I had a Silhouette for this part ~ but I’m getting one for my birthday. YAY!!)

I picked these these little ornaments up at Joann’s on Black Friday (80% off!) and each of them found a home in the drawers. Some of them are characters from the Nativity. I’m going to add scriptures later.

Bottom line- This is a cute, cheap project, but it took way too long to cut everything out. (I kind of wish my birthday was a month ago :)

Our First Christmas Tree!

Happy Belated Thanksgiving!! I hope each of you had a wonderful time surrounded by family and friends. Since Thanksgiving was keeping everyone busy, I decided to postpone the drawing for the winner of the Picture Frame Giveaway until this Friday, December 2nd. So you still have time to enter!

I can’t believe that my husband and I have been married for over 3 years and we’ve never had a Christmas tree taller than 1 ft. Like I said before, I have never been terribly festive during the holidays. The real reason we never bought a tree is that I didn’t want to buy one just to move it to a new apartment later. However, we’re staying put for a few years, which makes all the Christmas decoration-making and hoarding well worth the effort. So here’s our Christmas tree debut~

My mother-in-law took me to Joann’s on Black Friday for a little shopping spree since my birthday is coming up this weekend. I didn’t think I could stomach the long line to cut fabric (no matter how much of a deal it would be) so I stuck to the non-fabric section. I found some adorable ornaments for 60% off (plus a 20% off the total purchase. Yes!) I don’t think I need to tell you that I was in heaven.

I’m planning to make a few more ornaments this season to add to my collection.

DIY Board Book

There’s funky-whimsical picture frame giveaway this week (ends 11/28).

We had a blast taking The Little Lady on her first trip to the beach this summer. We were such proud parents as we watched her discover the water and sand for the first time. I think I took over 100 pictures. Then I came home and blogged about it. A friend told me I should make it into a book… so here it is~

I used a blank board book I bought from Bare Books. They’re really cheap, however there’s a flat rate for shipping of $10 so be ready to make it worth your while and stock up. {Perfect for Christmas gifts!} I actually first heard about Bare Books from my friend, Megan.

I used the 5” book for this project.

I printed out the pictures and cut them to size and rounded the corners. Then I used decoupage to glue the pictures onto each page of the book. I painted decoupage over the top to seal it.

I definitely need to improve my “decoupaging” skills. I think I put too much on a few of the pages and they warped making it impossible to close the book. So there’s a little tip for those of you that want to try this one out.

Other than that I love how it turned out and I can’t wait to see the look on The Little Lady’s face when she sees that there’s a book about her.

How to Paint Crisp Chevrons

Remember how I said, I would never talk about my bedroom again (since I’ve already posted about it 3 times)? Well, I kind of fibbed a little. I was looking through my pictures and realized I had forgotten to share how we painted the chevrons with clean edges. First, I read a post from Living with Lindsay that helped me get started. Then, my husband and I learned a few things along the way.

We marked each point using coordinates from the Excel program we created (by we, I mean, my husband). You can download it too, if you haven’t already.

The first lesson we learned was that it’s important to lie the tape down straight. We noticed that the tape stretched out if we pulled on it at a funny angle. So we used a level to make sure we were laying the tape flat and we ditched the level once we got the hang of it.

Lying the tape down so that it would come to a point was tricky, especially for the points that would be facing the paint. They had to be perfect. This is the method we ended up using:

We used painter’s caulk to seal the tape edges. Also, we used our fingers to rub the caulk into the edges of the tape. This was especially important, because we have textured walls. Living with Lindsay talks about how to do this if you’re using 2 colors.

After a few hours of preparation, painting was easy. Just stay in the lines.

(from beginning to end, including dry time, we spent 9 hours)

We took the tape off before the paint dried to reveal nice crisp lines. The paint will chip off if you wait to take the tape off after the paint dries. There were a few parts (I mean very few) that weren’t perfect, and that was because we painted too thick.

We were amazed at the abundance of tape used.

We found that Mr. Clean Magic Eraser worked great for removing paint splatters and smudges that had been on the wall for a while, but before it was completely dried.

Que Rica: Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream!

Thanksgiving is in the air. I can already smell the yams and turkey baking… Things are finally cooling down here in Arizona, and by cool, I mean I wear a sweatshirt in the mornings and evenings. We still have a ways to go.

I made this pumpkin pie ice cream last week, and I was surprised how close it came to the real deal. The only difference between this and actual pumpkin pie is that it’s cold. You pumpkin pie lover out there are going to love this!

I used the Blueberry Ice Cream recipe I shared with you a few months ago as a starting point. All the recipes I found on-line called for eggs and while that probably tastes better, it kind of grosses me out.

So here’s the recipe I came up with:

1 cup whole milk

3/4 white sugar

1/4 brown sugar

2 1/2 cups whipping cream

1/2 15 oz. can of pumpkin puree

1 tsp. cinnamon

1/4 nutmeg

1/2 ginger

1/8 cloves

Combine the milk and sugars in a saucepan over medium heat and stir until the sugar dissolves into the milk. Put in the refrigerator. After the milk/sugar mixture has cooled completely, mix in the pumpkin, spices and whipping cream. Then pour it into the ice cream maker and follow the machine’s instructions.

I think this would taste great with crushed graham cracker or ginger snaps swirled in at the last minute. Next time…
